Chromium Stress in Plants: Toxicity, Tolerance and Phytoremediation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Extensive industrial activities resulted in an increase chromium (Cr) contamination the environment. The toxicity of Cr severely affects plant growth and development. is also recognized as a human carcinogen that enters body via inhalation or by consuming Cr-contaminated food products. Taking consideration enrichment environment its toxic effects, US Environmental Protection Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Registry listed priority pollutant. In nature, exists various valence states, including Cr(III) Cr(VI). Cr(VI) most persistent form soil. Plants uptake through transporters such phosphate sulfate transporters. exerts effect generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) hampering metabolic physiological pathways. Studies on genetic transcriptional regulation plants have shown detoxification genes get up-regulated confer tolerance under stress. recent years, ability to withstand accumulating inside has been one promising bioremediation methods contaminated region. This review summarized occurrence plants, role stress response, utilized phytoremediation regions.

Chromium toxicity in plants.

Due to its wide industrial use, chromium is considered a serious environmental pollutant. Contamination of soil and water by chromium (Cr) is of recent concern. Toxicity of Cr to plants depends on its valence state: Cr(VI) is highly toxic and mobile whereas Cr(III) is less toxic. Since plants lack a specific transport system for Cr, it is taken up by carriers of essential ions such as sulfate o...

Aluminum Toxicity and Tolerance in Plants.

Aluminum (Al) is the most abundant metal in the earths crust, comprising about 7% of its mass. Since many plant species are sensitive to micromolar concentrations of Al, the potential for soils to be A1 toxic is considerable. Fortunately, most of the A1 is bound by ligands or occurs in other nonphytotoxic forms such as aluminosilicates and precipitates. However, solubilization of this A1 is enh...

Phytoremediation - An Innovative Approach for Attenuation of Chromium Toxicity and Rice Cultivation in Mining Areas

Industries play a vital part in progress of human civilization. The process of industrialization leads to several detrimental effects on human health and environment with its toxic discharges. Among several developing countries, India is considered as a country having huge natural resources with emerging industrial avenues for satisfying the growing demands of ever-increasing population. As a r...

Fertilizers and Mixed Crop Cultivation of Chromium Tolerant and Sensitive Plants under Chromium Toxicity

Zea mays (maize) and Vigna radiata (green gram) are found to be the chromium (Cr) tolerant and sensitive plants, respectively. In the present paper, we investigate the reduction of the toxicity of Cr in the sensitive plants by the mixed crop cultivation in the field using various amendments. Further, the potassium dichromate was used as the source of hexavalent Cr. The results indicated that Cr...

Phytoremediation of Lead, Cadmium and Chromium Contaminated Soils using Selected Weed Plants

Human activities like mining, transport, agriculture, industrial waste disposal and military actions release inorganic pollutants in high concentrations that are toxic to natural ecosystems. Heavy metal pollution causes potential ecological risk. Heavy metals like Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb) and Chromium (Cr) when present in high concentrations in soil exert potential toxic effects on overall growt...
